June Car Accident Lawsuits Filed from Maryland Case Search

By Byron Warnken

In June of 2014, 295 motor tort cases were filed in the Maryland Circuit Courts.

  • 96 lawsuits were filed in Baltimore City Circuit Court
  • 77 lawsuits filed in Baltimore County Circuit Court
  • 13 filed in Washington county Circuit Court
  • 33 lawsuits in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court
  • 12 suits filed in Howard County Circuit Court

Though the majority of attorneys filed more than 1 case out of the 295 in July, few filed more than 3.  Lon C. Engel of Engel & Engel, P.A. filed the most cases for a single attorney, numbering 7 in total.  Lee Saltzberg of Towson, MD filed 6 cases, the second most cases for any one attorney, and John N. Fox, Jr. of Sellers, Fox, Kahn & Bender, P.A. filed the third most cases at 5 total.

Filing the 4th most cases at 4 total were Charles J. Fratus of Fratus|Brady, L.L.C., Harold P. Dwin of Cohen & Dwin, P.A., Jonathan S. Resnick out of Pikesville, and David B. Jackson and A. David Freeman of Ingerman & Horwitz L.L.P.

It’s important to note that sometimes suits are filed and either miscategorized or categorized under a different heading than “motor torts.”  Car accident cases in Maryland Judiciary Case Search are sometimes referred to as other civil, other tort, or simply civil.  Also, many times lawsuits are filed in district court in Maryland, when there are smaller damages.

Car accident statistics nationwide are simply staggering.  Over 10 million motor vehicle accidents occur each year in the United States, with over 100,000 in Maryland alone.  If the June pace were consistent throughout the year, there would be 3,540 lawsuits stemming from car accidents in Maryland.  Therefore, the question: How often is a lawsuit filed in circuit court in a car accident case would be about four percent.  This is fairly consistent with expectations.  Many times, there is no real personal injury.  And even when there is personal injury, the vast majority of cases are resolved via settlement.

According to a study by CarInsurance.com of more than 42,000 car insurance shoppers from 2011 to 2013 who listed previous incidents, the following are some of the most common reported problems.

  • Struck another car: 22.7%
  • Another car struck me: 22.2%
  • Single-car accident: 7.9%
  • Act of nature: 5.8%
  • Struck parked car or tree: 5.4%
  • Car struck while parked: 5.0%
  • Debris or other non-accident damage (such as hitting a pothole): 2.9%
  • Vandalism: 2.4%
  • Struck animal: 2.4%
  • Windshield or glass: 2.2%
  • Theft of car/theft of parts: 1.5%
  • Hit a pedestrian: 0.4%

By Byron Warnken

There are numerous problems with “unbiased lawyer reviews.”  Some of the problems are related to unbiased, some to lawyers, and some to reviews.  Put them all together and unbiased lawyer reviews are nearly impossible in practice.  Let’s work backwards. Reviews The Internet has taught us how problematic reviews are.  In essence, anyone can leave a […]

InjuryLawyerDatabase is slow.  It’s a problem.  We’re going to move hosting companies to improve the site speed.  It’s a by product of success.  We’ve had a lot more attention and traffic than we anticipated this early. We launched with a slate of plaintiffs’ lawyers.  From there, we got exhaustive data on the top twenty defendants […]
