Maryland Medical Malpractice Makes Up 59 out of a total of 14,917 Cases

From June through August of 2019, there were 59 medical malpractice lawsuits filed in Maryland hospitals or against Maryland doctors or practices.**  That’s less than 20 per month.  During that time period, 4637 cases were filed in circuit courts in June, 5298 in July, and 4982 in August.  That’s a total of 14,917 civil actions in circuit courts.

Therefore, 0.4% of civil circuit court actions are medical malpractice.  59 out of 14,917.  The 14,917 doesn’t include criminal cases.  It doesn’t include traffic.  It doesn’t include minor car accidents.  It doesn’t include peace orders.  It doesn’t include the vast majority of landlord tenant actions or the vast, vast majority of collections cases.  And this has been pretty consistent over time.  See this infographic.

**Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties are not included in these statistics (neither the number of med mal, nor the aggregate).  All other counties in Maryland are accounted for, including Baltimore City and Baltimore County.
