What Is Erb’s Palsy?
According to the American Society of Orthopedic Surgeons, Erb’s palsy is a form of brachial plexus palsy that occurs when a baby’s neck is stretched too far to one side during delivery. The stretching of the neck causes damage to the brachial plexus, a complex grouping of nerves close to the neck responsible for sensation and movement in the fingers, hand and arm.
What are the Signs and Symptoms of Erb’s Palsy?
A child with Erb’s palsy will exhibit loss of feeling and weakness in one arm. In more severe cases, the child may be partially or totally paralyzed in the affected arm. Most infants that develop Erb’s palsy after delivery will recover the lost feeling and movement in the arm. However, in some cases, the child’s arm may remain damaged indefinitely.
If the child’s arm doesn’t recover, he or she will experience movement and feeling limitations for the rest of his or her life. Motor skills may develop slowly and/or poorly, and the child may be unable to perform tasks that require the use of both arms.
What Can an Erb’s Palsy Lawyer Do for You?
According to the National Library of Medicine, children can develop Erb’s palsy as a result of a doctor’s actions during or after delivery. For example, if the doctor is too forceful with the child’s neck during the delivery, or if he fails to rehabilitate the child’s injury appropriately, he may be at fault for lasting damage. If your child developed Erb’s palsy because of a doctor’s negligence or malpractice, you may be entitled to compensation.
If you hire a qualified lawyer, he or she can review your child’s medical records to determine whether the doctor is at fault for the injuries your child sustained. In some cases, a lawsuit will be filed.
