Renamed Union Memorial Hospital in 1920, it became one of the first facilities to specialize in orthopedic surgery. By the end of WWII, Union Memorial was recognized as a national leader in orthopedics, and it maintains a strong reputation in the field today. In 1998 the hospital merged with Medlantic Healthcare Group/Helix Health, a non-profit healthcare organization that operates several other medical centers throughout Maryland. The system was renamed Medstar Health in 1999, and in 2012 Union Memorial Hospital was renamed Medstar Union Memorial Hospital.

Union Memorial Hospital Lawsuits in the News
In March 2019, Medstar Union Memorial Hospital agreed to pay the U.S. government $35 million to resolve litigation alleging that its star cardiologist, Dr. John Wang, engaged in financial misconduct. The settlement, which also addressed a separate lawsuit against Medstar Franklin Square Medical Center involving illegal kickbacks, was the result of an investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office after former patients of Wang accused him of performing medically unnecessary stent placement procedures and then submitting claims for those procedures to Medicare. Such conduct, the suit argued, not only amounted to theft from taxpayers but also violated the False Claims Act, a law designed to protect patients from unwarranted and potentially dangerous medical treatment that can stem from unethical billing practices.
Satellite Locations
In addition to its main downtown Baltimore campus, Union Memorial has several primary and orthopedic specialty care locations scattered throughout the metro area.
